With today being the universal day of love, it was only fitting that Toronto’s most desirable gentlemen gathered Tuesday night to duke it out, bachelors-versus-husbands style, in a silent bouquet auction. The Pre-Valentine’s Day Soirée was presented by sisters Maryam and Nargues Mansouri in the showroom of The Perry, Mansouri Living’s elegant 11-storey condo building in the works at Avenue and Davenport. Hostess Ainsley Kerr was appropriately festive in a bright pink dress as she introduced the makeshift florists from the space’s kitchen while a strappy pair of Tom Ford sandals looked on from the walk-in closet.

Pulling for the singletons were Songs & Cigarettes’ editor-in-chief Braden Rosner,Toronto Life’s Peter Saltsman, Yorkville Physiotherapy’s James Braithwaiteand über-stylish makeup artist to the stars (and, on occasion, yours truly) Robert Weir. On the till-death-do-us-part team were Allen Chan of The Design Agency, oyster baron John Belknap of John & Sons Oyster House, Robert Faissal of Richmond Development and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Trevor Born, who splits his time between Yorkville and the Upper East Side. Proceeds from the bouquets, which netted $1,500 to be matched by Mansouri Living, went to Toronto-based charity Rethink Breast Cancer.

While the arrangements on both sides of the marital divide were all centrepiece worthy, there was a noticeable emphasis on vertical prowess by the marrieds. Some of the contestants admittedly didn’t know their roses from their violets, and may have had a little bit of help from the pros down the street at Kay & Young’s Florists. In the end it was Robert Faissal’s stunner that won the most bids, fetching $220 and proving that, when it comes to romance, a little DIY goes a long way.
